Can Omeprazole Be Tapered And Ceased Without Any Side Effects?
I have been taking omeperazal (sp) for about 5yrs. I take 1 pill a day. I want to stop taking this medication for fear of long term issues. I have have changed my diet to exclude all of the foods that bother my acid reflux. I started taking 1/2 of my dose a week ago. I seem to be managing my symptoms pretty well. Do I have anything to fear by taking 1/2 my dose and eventually quit all together? Dave
1. Remember that suddenly stopping the drug does cause rebound heartburn [nausea, regurgitation of food, sour/acid taste in throat] in the majority of patients and, causes significant digestive distress.
2. clinically significant side effects/long term issues may occur during the treatment with omeprazole and treating physicians should be aware of this phenomenon, and because of the ADR [ adverse drug reaction] is very variable thus you should talk with your attending physician as to how to proceed further.
PS. under no circumstances you should stop-change- alter the dosage without first consulting with your doctor.
