Hello,
Long-term acid suppression, especially with PPIs (
Proton Pump Inhibitors e.g. Omeprazole), has been associated with a higher incidence of
community-acquired pneumonia as well as community and hospital-acquired Clostridium difficile–associated disease.
Long-term use of PPIs is also associated with the development of hip fractures in older women. Vitamin B12-deficiency anaemia is also not uncommon.
Long-term use of PPIs has also been implicated in the development of iron and
magnesium deficiency.
Proton pump inhibitors can also cause
Interstitial nephritis (Drug-induced Nephropathy).
Rebound
gastric acid hypersecretion occurs even after relatively, short-term usage (2 months) and may last for up to 2 months after, the PPI has been discontinued.
Gradual tapering of the PPI and switching to an H2 receptor antagonist (e.g. Ranitidine) may prevent this from occurring.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Tushar Kanti Biswas, Internal Medicine Specialist
