Hi & Welcome.
Incomplete data like age, gender, any associated medical illness, stress, etc.
Yes it can be taken for the treatment of severe hair loss under the supervision of a
dermatologist.
Based on the history given you seem to have recurrent severe hair fall apparently caused by a skin condition called
alopecia areata.
It mostly presents as a sudden loss of hair in well demarcated localized areas like scalp and /or body. It is a non-scarring autoimmune,
inflammatory hair loss.
Oral steroids like Omnacortil are one of the commonly prescribed therapies in patients with extensive alopecia areata.
Treatment course ranges from 1-6 months, but prolonged courses should be avoided to prevent the side effects of steroids.
You are advised to consult your dermatologist for further evaluation and possible use of another medication like
Sulfasalazine or Methotrexate which have shown good hair regrowth in the treatment of alopecia areata.
Your doctor may also advise
Photochemotherapy like PUVA which is also found to be successful in such cases.
Hope the advice given above would be useful.
