Can Oxcarbazepine Cause Blurred Vision And Disability In Feet?

I began taking Oxcarbazepine at the end of last November for ongoing symptoms (pain) of trigeminal neuralga following the removal of an accoustic schwanoma. At the beginning of December, I had a first cararact removed with the other cataract surgery scheduled for the beginning of this coming February. Questions : 1/ Is it possible that the oxcarbazépine medication is contributing to my worsening symptoms of increasing and worrisome blurriness and unsteadiness on my feet? Of my own initiative, two days ago, I diminished my daily dosage in half. I put a telephone call in today to my neurologist. I want to safely proceed in coming off of the Oxcarbazepine with the hopes that my sight improve and stabilize. It was not as bad as it currently is developing, even prior to my first cataract surgery. 2/ Could it be dangerous to stop all of the medication immediately? FYI I was taking a minimal 150mg per day - 75mg am and 75mg pm. It does take the edge off. At this point though, I think I would rather suffer with the facial pain than to experience the horrendous blurriness and imbalance that is increasing. Thank you kindly for your advice, greatly appreciated. Sincerely yours,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

After cataract surgery some patients complain of blurry vision. You are suggested to get a follow up clinical examination done by your treating doctor to detect the pathology causing you blurry vision.

However, your symptoms are indicative of side effects of Oxcarbazepine. You are having side effects affecting your nervous system (abnormal gait, ataxia, dizziness, headache or tremor).

You are suggested to inform your treating doctor and get the medicines monitored, dose tapered and replaced by a medicine that suits you better. You are suggested to get connected to a detox center if you have to taper a medicine so that any withdrawal symptom can be managed urgently & you stay comfortable.

Get examined by a Neurologist, get all nerve conduction and imaging tests done. If required nerve biopsy done. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
