Can Oxycodone Be Taken 2 Hours After Taking Hydrocodone?
Hello my fiance just had surgery this morning. On Tuesday prior to surgery he was prescribed hydrocodone/acetaminophen 5-325. He has been taking them as prescribed. Today after surgery he was prescribed oxycodone 5mg. The question is he just took a hydrocodone approx 2 hours ago, we just picked up his prescription of oxycodone he is still in a lot of pain can he take a oxycodone now or does he need to wait a certain length of time?
It is not advisable to give oxycodone 2 hours after taking hydrocodone. Taking opioid analgesics like hydrocodone and oxycodone together at a short interval can cause central nervous systemdepression which can lead to serious side effects including respiratory distress, coma, and even death.
Talk to his doctor to prescribe alternatives like anti-inflammatory drugs that do not interact, or he may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
