Can Pap Smear Detect Mono And Confuse It As HSV1?

I had a Pap smear done and was tested for HSV1. I was under the impression that could only be done through blood test. I also have had mono since 3rd grade. I am now 24 years old. I ve always been safe through intercourse. Could the Pap smear detect mono and confuse it as HSV1? I was also sick when the pap was taken so the blood cells would have been shedding then.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

HSV1 is a viral infection whereas mono is caused by yeast. It is highly unlikely to have a cross-reaction or a false positive reaction between the two infections.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
