Can Pepto Bismol Tablets Taken During Pregnancy Cause Fetal Harm?
I learned on Friday that I m pregnant with our first. This evening I was feeling pretty terrible and I took 2 TBS of Pepto Bismol before I thought about it not being safe for the baby. That was all I took and all I will take--but is the baby okay? I m about 10 weeks along. Thank you!
Pepto Bismol is generally not advised for use during pregnancy because it is in a class of drugs called salicylates, a cousin of aspirin, which in high and prolonged doses can cause harm, especially in the third trimester. However, two tablets early in the first trimester are extremely unlikely to cause any problems. Antacid tablets containing calcium carbonate, like Tums, can be used safely during pregnancy. They work well for heartburn, indigestion and gas. I would invest in a large bottle as most women get some level of heartburn at some point in pregnancy. But you do not need to be concerned about the tablets you took already.
I hope this answers your question and good luck with your pregnancy!
Best wishes, Dr. Brown
