Can Pradaxa Cause Problems For A Person With An Artificial Aortic Valve?

Hi - I had a quadruple bypass surgery and an aortic artificial valve replaced last June. About a month later - a blood clot was detected in my lower right leg - the leg from which they took a vein. My cardiologist and a pharmacologist prescribed Pradaxa - the clot was minimalized in a few weeks and I stopped taking the Pradaxa. I have been seeing ads for Pradaxa that state it should not be used if you have an artificial valve. Please advise what the dangers are - i.e. implications of taking Pradaxa if you DO have an artificial aortic valve. Thank you - Louis

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to healthcaremagic.com and thanks for sharing your concern with us.
Pradaxa is contraindicated in patients with prosthetic heart valves as it increases the occurrence of valve thrombosis , stroke , TIA and myocardial infarctions and increased bleeding complications as well . Because of such bleeding and thromboembolic events this medicine is strictly contraindicated in patients with mechanical prosthetic valves.
Best Regards,
DR.S.TOMAR
