Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 46. I haven t had a period in 56 days. Periods are usually between 21 - 26 days apart with a couple being around 35 day cycles in the pat year. My obgyn wants me to take provera for 10 days then do an ultrasound in in three weeks. I do not want to to take provera. I am afraid it will cause breast cancer.
I understand your concern but don't worry so much because provera use can't cause breast cancer if it is used for a short period of time. According to a new study, it has a very scary side effect: doubling risk of breast cancer, only if it is used for a long period of time ,over five years. Hence in my opinion if your og-gyn have suggested you to take Provera ,do not hesitate . If you are afraid for breast cancer and you have familiar history, have a mammography yearly .
All the best
