Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Prozac Or Lexapro Be Used In Increasing The Height In Children?
Do teens who take prozac or lexapro still grow? I read that lots of kids have stunted growth and stop growing once they start these drugs. My daughter is barely 5 feet tall at 14 yrs old. I m thinking Prozac might help her but I am hesitant to deprive her of her final growth spurt if she can get a couple more inches. In your experience, have your teenage patients continued to get taller while taking Prozac, or are these things I ve read just a small percentage of cases?
A decrease in growth rate, possibly secondary to suppression of growth hormone secretion, may occur during antidepressant therapy. But larger studies are not available for understanding the magnitude of these side effects. The percentage of these side effects are less than 10 %.Based on your child need and doctor's input, the decision to continue Prozac should be taken.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
