Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Pyridium Cause False Positive For Morphine In A Drug Test?
I have a UTI and kidney infection...I took a drug test last week, the same day I was put on cipro anti biotics and pyridium... the drug test came back positive for morphine and I have never had morphine, other than after a surgery. Is there any way that having a kidney infection or those medicines can cause a false positive on a urine drug test?
The antibiotic ciprofloxacin seems to be responsible for the false positive test for morphine. This is due to cross reactivity of ciprofloxacin to the antibody used in the screening test. However, the confirmatory test like gas chromatography-mass spectrometry tests (GC-MS) which is more specific and sensitive for morphine will rule out this false positive drug test.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
