Can Ranitidine Be Taken While On Loratadine?

I have taken pantoprazole na 40 mg for years for acid reflux coming up in my throat, especially at night, even with head of bed raised. i would like to quit using it. Tums do not seem to be adequate. I am considering ranitidine. I am already taking loratadine for allergies. Is there an interaction? Can Zantac be taken for an extended period of time?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Loratadine is an antihistamine medication that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. It is used to treat sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, hives, skin rash, itching and other cold or allergy symptoms.
Ranitidine belongs to a group of drugs called 'histamine-2 blockers'. It acts as antacid by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.
Although no major interactions have been reported, intake of loratadine could potentially interact with ranitidine and cause certain minor effects in the form of headache, urticaria, hypotension, vomiting and nausea.
In such circumstances, you need to stop taking the drugs together and seek medical attention promptly.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
