Can Ritalin Be Taken While Suffering From Heart Murmur?
I am anxious about starting my 8 year old son on Ritalin. He is struggling in school and I want him to do well and not have so much trouble focusing. My main concern is long term effects on his health and well being. He has had a slight heart murmur since birth and his doctor reassured me that it is safe. Any opinions on this would be appreciated.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It is understandable to be concerned about starting any medication in a child but remember that if you notice any problems with the use of the medication, you can consult his doctor and it can be discontinued.
Side effects can occur in some children or adults but they do not occur in all people and the intensity varies from one person to the next. It is possible that he may have minimal side effects but if this is not the case, you can discuss with his doctor.
It is possible he may do extremely well and his school grades would improve but none of this would be known till he starts. If there is a serious issue when he starts, it can be stopped.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
