Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband had two strokes on 08-29-16. They affected the right occipital and parietal lobes of the brain and the left parietal lobe. He is receiving speech and physical therapy. He has no appetite and has lost 50 pounds in the last two months. He takes Paxil for depression. A friend told me that Seroquel can be used for depression in conjunction with other medications, and Seroquel will help to increase appetite. Do you think Seroquel is a possible solution to his loss of appetite and loss of taste? He was just hospitalized because he was anemic and received four units of blood. He will drink Ensure and Boost as nutritional supplements. Please respond to me: Valentine Eymard YYYY@YYYY Thank you
It is a known fact that paxil does cause loss of appetite as an adverse effect in up to 10% of individuals. Seroquel on the other hand causes increased appetite in 2-12% of individuals. So there are two issues here- there are no guarantees that your husband may be "lucky" to have this beneficial adverse effect. Also there are other major potential adverse effects of seroquel such as headaches, sleep walking, constipation, fatigue, dry mouth, dizziness, increased diastolic blood pressure among others.
