Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Mom has asthma for about three years and was prescribed advair inhaler later spiriva was added for what I guess was for side effect of advair-bronco spasm? About 6-12 months later she developed atrial fibrillation non valvular. Could stopping spiriva help resolve the atrial fibrillation? I am also concerned about her cardizem 180 mg extended release being ordered twice daily instead of once daily. She also is on mutaq 400 mg.
Spiriva is a brand name of drug called tiptropium. It can cause increases heart bears and palpitations after long term use. However atrial fibrillation is rare but has been reported. Before attributing to sprivia other causes like thyroidhormonal dysfunction and arrhythmias has to be ruled out. Consult a cardiologist and get evaluated, you can switch to other cardio friendly alternatives instead of sprivia.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
