Can Spironolactone Be Taken Along With Clorthalidone?

I am currently taking 25mg chlorthalidone and I was just prescribed 50 mg of spironolactone to take them together. I didn t know new medication was a diuretic also. I have persistent high blood pressure with fluid retention. I am worried about overdose as I had an episode a few years ago where I passed out with a double diuretic of chlorthalidone and Hydrochlorothiazide

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You are right, both are diuretics. However, the dose is not very high and we commonly prescribe them both because one causes low potassium and the other cause high potassium, so combining them may better control your bp and may also help regulate potassium.

You should take them as advised, and if you feel dizzy then you can ask your doctor, but most of the times this dose is well tolerated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
