Can Tramadol Be Taken Past Its Expiration Date?
Hi Dr Rynne, Can tramadol be taken three or five years past its expiration date even if it has been stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator? Why are expiration dates only a few years? For example Mg tablets have an expiration date and Mg is an element and will not break down for billions of years.

Solid dosage forms, such as tablets and capsules, appear to be most stable past their expiration date. Drugs that exist in solution or as a reconstituted suspension, and that require refrigeration, may not have the required potency if used when outdated.
If questions still remain about how to handle an expired medication, it is wise to speak with your pharmacist or physician, who can offer additional information and advice.I think it would be wise to get a new prescription once expired.
