Can Trazodone Be Given To A HIV+ Patient Taking Ritonavir?
I would like to prescribe Trazadone as a sleep aid for an HIV+ patient taking Ritonavir. It appears that the Ritonavir potentiates the Trazadone. She has a hx of drug addiction in the past. Was planning on starting her on 50mg for insomnia, thinking I should go with 25mg to start. Her system has seen a lot of drug exposure- wondering if 25mg will help.
It seems you are a treating physician. If the patient is presently abstinent from drugs trazodone maybe helpful and will have lesser abuse potential than benzodiazepenes. You may start low and go slow and optimise dosage according to her symptoms. Also evaluate whether sleep disturbances are primary or secondary to some other medical or psychiatric disorder. Before prescribing drugs sleep hygiene and CBT may be tried and it may work if followed regularly.
