Can Valsartan 40mg Be Given Thrice To A Patient With High BP Levels?

Mom, 85. Takes 40 mg valsartan daily. Dr instructions were if higher give 2nd dose. She took dose at 10 am. At 11 pm bp went up to 170/100. She was in bed. At approximately 11 30 I gave her 40mg valsartan. Checked by again at 1 30. No change to speak of. Maybe 175/100. Is it safe to give her another? She feels fine. Was in a lot of pain earlier but that seems to have subsided.

Hello,

Valsartan starting dose should not be more then 80 mg a day, with time if blood pressure is not controlled higher doses can be used with a dose of 320 being the maximum.

If her blood pressure is not good with the dose that the doctor recommended i would not exceed the daily dose of 80 mg a day if she has just started it. Generally we need to give medications a few days to a couple of weeks before we know if it is working and if dose adjustments are needed so there is no need and not safe to adjust the dose in one day.

Please talk to your doctor if the blood pressure continues to be high or she has any complaint.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
