Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had shingles and was written a wrong prescription for Valtrex of 6g per day in stead of 3g per day. Ended up with acute renal failure. Litigation going on and attorneys said they found that up to 8g per day can be taken. I can t find any information on this dosage.
As per your history is concerned let me tell you that Valtrex (valacyclovir) is an antiviral drug. It slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus to help the body fight the infection.Valtrex is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses, including genital herpes, cold sores, and shingles (herpes zoster) in adults. It is used to treat cold sores in children who are at least 12 years old, or chickenpox in children who are at least 2 years old.
Cold Sores (Herpes Labialis): The recommended dosage of VALTREX for treatment of cold sores is 2 grams twice daily for 1 day taken 12 hours apart. Genital Herpes: Initial Episode: The recommended dosage of VALTREX for treatment of initial genital herpes is 1 gram twice daily for 10 days.Herpes Zoster: The recommended dosage of VALTREX for treatment of herpes zoster is 1 gram 3 times daily for 7 days.
Renal damage is most likely due to crystallization of acyclovir in the renal tubules. Patients with preexisting renal insufficiency are at greater risk for developing neurotoxicity and further deterioration in renal function. Thanks
