Can Vitamins And Supplements Intake Cause High Cholesterol?

I had a check up and my AST was 38 and my ALT was 59. I was taking a lot of vitamins and supplements to get my cholesterol down but cholesterol is still high. Could the vitamins and supplements be giving me a high ALT score and a nearly high AST score or should I be more worried like liver cancer?

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that there are different causes of possible elevated liver enzymes.

Some vitamins can raise the liver enzymes (like possible vitamin A in ac. retinoic form).

Painkillers like acetaminophen and small amounts of alcohol could also cause a small increase in your liver enzymes.

Nevertheless, there is nothing to worry about any possible liver cancer.

I recommend repeating the liver enzymes after a month.

If they result elevated again, an abdominal ultrasound would help examine your liver better.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Greetings! Dr. Iliri
