Can Voltaren Be Taken While On Dexamethasone?

My husband has a glioblastoma and is currently taking dexamethasone 4mg TID and began CCNU on Nov 30th. Prior to being hospitalized for having a status epileptic episode due to not taking his steroids as prescribed to control the swelling around the tumor site, he was taking Voltaren, which was the miracle drug for his joints. He has all the classic side effects from the steroid treatment and is having joint pain again. I want to start him back on his Voltaren but don’t want to interfere with the CCNU or contraindicated the dexamethasone. He also takes Keppra.

Hello,

Yes, it can be taken along with a proton pump inhibitor.

Taking Voltaren and Dexamethasone drugs together may increase the risk of side effects in the gastrointestinal tract such as inflammation, bleeding, ulceration, and rarely, perforation. You should take these medications with food to lessen the risk.

Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. Your doctor may also be able to recommend proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole to help protect the stomach and intestine.

You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising, or have other signs and symptoms of bleeding such as dizziness, red or black, tarry stools; coughing up or vomiting fresh or dried blood that looks like coffee ground.

There is no harmful interaction with other medications. CCNU should be as a single dose every 6 weeks as advised by his oncologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
