Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve recently been prescribed citalopram 20 mg for depression and anxiety. I m on day 3 and the side effects are terrible. Nausea all day long, loss of appetite and terrible increased anxiety. I have to start a new job and I m freaking out. Would taking Xanax help get me through these terrible side effects? The last time I took any antidepressants was 2008 and it was 10 mg citalopram.
Citalopram is a SSRI drug and it is a good anti-anxiety and antidepressant drug. The drug usually start showing its effect in about 2-4 weeks. When the drug is started for first few days patients may develop increase in anxiety, it is called as rebound increase in anxiety and is common with SSRIs. The anxiety usually last for 3-5 days and I would advise you to wait for some days and your anxiety will decrease. Xanax is alprazolam and this is a good anxiety drug. It can help to control these symptoms effectively. But take the drug only after consulting your psychiatrist. Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol for some days and your anxiety will decrease.
Thanks, hope this helps you.
