Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am an 81-year-old woman who is having problems with stress causing IBS, problems making good decisions, and fatigue. I have had past problems with falling and breaking ankles and wrist and must be able to drive as my husband cannot do so anymore. My social worker has suggested Xanax. Is it advisable?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Xanax contains 'alprazolam', which is a benzodiazepine. It affects certain chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people with anxiety. Hence, it is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders and anxiety caused by depression. It would certainly help in bringing down the stress levels when taken. However, it would be advisable to consult Physician and get evaluated before taking such medication. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
