Can Xifaxan Prescribed For Cirrhosis Have Any Side Effects?
My husband was diagnosed with cirrohsis of the liver back in Oct. He was put on Xifaxin. He s supposed to take it twice a day. I realized when I went to renew it that he s gone about 2 months now without needing a renewal and he should have renewed a month ago. He s having nausea, vomiting and diarrhea since yesterday. He doesn t feel good at all. Could his cirrohsis be getting worse since he s not taking the xifaxin?
* The Xifaxan is used to treat or prevent hepatic encephalopathy via clearance of nitrogenous waste products from the gut portion.
* It is not the side effect of the drug, but the underlying pathology showing worsening diarrhea, vomiting and other symptoms.
You need immediate consultation with your treating gastro specialist for another refill of the drug with or without the supportive need of probiotics and other medications to control at earliest.
Till that time, maintenance of hydration with oral rehydration salt matters a great for time being the approach.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
