Yes, they are effective in the treatment of hives.
The first line of treatment of hives includes the use of the second-generation or newer antihistamines like Zyrtec (
Cetirizine) which have fewer side effects, such as drowsiness, than older antihistamines like Benadryl (
Diphenhydramine).
If the newer antihistamines don't help you, then you can take an older form of the drug like Benadryl but only before bedtime, as it can make you drowsy.
If antihistamines alone don't relieve your symptoms, other drugs that may be taken which include:
Histamine (H-2) blockers like Zantac (
Ranitidine)
Anti-inflammatory medications like oral corticosteroid (
Prednisone) which can help lessen swelling, redness & itching. These usually are used only for a short time to control severe hives or
angioedema because they can cause serious side effects.
