Can A Foley Catheter Be Replaced By A Nephrostomy Tube?

My father had a Foley catheter placed yesterday during his ureter resectioning surgery. He was released today with a very short foley tube that doesn t allow the bag to hang lower than his bladder while sleeping in bed. The urine has collected at the top of the bag while laying down, with the bag resting higher than his bladder. We have a sterile unused naphrostomy tube and bag set available ( his naphrostomy bag was removed during surgery). Could we possibly replace the short foley tubing with the unused naphrostomy tubing? Are there any other options?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You can replace a folley’s tube with a nephrostomy tube. You have to confirm the gauge size before changing the tube and must be sterile also. The other option is that you can change the bag with long connecting tube so that it can hang lower.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
