Can A Baby Get Shingles Before Getting Chicken Pox?

My 2 yr old grandson was exposed to shingles by an elder family member. He has a very angry blister that appears to have popped but is getting worse not better. Its on his torso near his hip bone. Its not spreading and dosent seem to itch him nor does it seem to bother him at all. It bothers his mother & myself. Can a baby get shingles before chicken pox?

No. If a baby is exposed to shingles and has not yet had chickenpox, he may get chickenpox. Both diseases are caused by the same virus. In the case of shingles, the virus has gone dormant in the body, maybe for years, and then shows up as a shingles outbreak. When the virus passes to someone who has never had chickenpox, including an adult, it will appear the first time as chickenpox. It's hard to say what the blister is. It could be unrelated, perhaps a localized skin infection, or maybe a very mild case of chickenpox with minimal lesions and this one got infected. If he's had the immunizations for chickenpox, it's unlikely to be related to chickenpox. Hope this answers your question.
