Can A Broken Central Venous Line In The Neck Be Removed?

My son had a central venous line in his neck when he had emergency surgery 2 years ago. They found that they had left it in when he had to go back to that hospital after the 2 years. They tried to take it out and broke it. It went from his neck to his groin. How much danger is he in with 6 inches about remaining in his vein after all this time?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It has to be removed immediately to avoid fatal complications. Consult a vascular surgeon a the earliest. Since it had slipped from original site, we have to locate it by serial CT scans or we may require help from a cath lab.

Thanks.
