Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can A Dental Prophylaxis Be Done While Suffering From A Congenital Heart Disease?
I have a congenital heart disease and need dental prophylaxis. I have a deep scaling procedure scheduled tomorrow morning and my prophylactic antibiotic was never called in. I do have doxycycline that I was given for hidradenitis suppurativa that I had to stop secondary to side effects (GI related). The medication is not expired. I normally get cephalexin, but again only have cipro 500mg tabs on hand. Can this be used for dental prophylaxis and if so at what dose?
Yes, in case of congenital heart disease, dental prophylaxis as well as dental procedures are important. You should always avoid dental caries, as it may transmit infections directly in the blood which may cause endocarditis and complicate the cardiac condition.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Shyam B. Kale,
