Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I take metoprolol 25 mg twice dly. and now my doc wants me to also take losartan potassium 25 mg once dly..i m worried that may make my blood pressure to low...with just the metoprolol my bp usually stays around 130/72...earlier today is was 150/88...I have not started the losartan yet..what do you think? I am also diabetis taking metformin...no kidney problems or anything.
Thank you for the query. I would like to know about you age and gender. Iwould also like to know about your Urine for Albumin-Creatinine ratio (ACR) if done. Losartan potassium is an Angiotensin Receptor Blocker (ARB), which is ideal for the management of hypertension in diabetic patients. It prevents the progression of Diabetic Nephropathy (by reducing microalbuminuria or proteinuria), by virtue of its mode of action (on the renal angiotensin aldosterone axis). Losartan potassium at 25 mg is not a high dose, hence it shouldn't cause hypotension (as mentioned by you the BP recording was 150/88 mm of Hg). It will have beneficial effect since you are a diabetic. If you have a normal renal function test and serum potassium levels, there is no harm in starting this medication.
Hope this helps you.
