Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can a lipoma turn into cancer? I had a small mass diagnosed in my upper thigh over 5-8 years ago as a li poma, but this week had an ultrasound done and it did not look like your typical lipoma according to the technician and she advised I seek a surgeon and have it removed and tissue examined by pathologist. What do you think?
Lipoma do not turn cancerous. However there are certain rare instances where Lipomosarcoma (which is cancerous) was misdiagnosed as Lipoma. But it is highly unlikely in your case since you have had the lipoma for almost 5-8 years, especially if biopsy had confirmed the diagnosis back then. I strongly advice that you consult a surgeon for biopsy of the lump and confirmation of diagnosis.
Hope I was able to answer your question Please feel free to address any more concerns Regards, Dr.Lekshmi
