Can A Major Sinus Infection Cause Large Mucus?

I have sinusitis. I have had two major sinus surgeries one in 2006 and one on 2009. The first one I had 6 polyps in my right side and a infection was in my cheek bone. The second surgery I had 6 polyps removed from left side. I was 5 days post OP and I started severely bleeding and would not clot. I have never done drugs nor do I drink so it was such a freak thing. I was in the hospital for 5 nights due to this. Now my question is if am highly allergic to mildew, smoke and dust. It seems like twice a month I will choke up a large hard odd shape mucus that is very large. It feels like it comes from my sinuses and tries to travel down my throat when I lay down. What can this be from?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you have a serious case of chronic sinus infection and as you are also allergic to a number of irritants there is a possibility that when you are exposed to the irritants there is also irritation in the sinuses leading to excess mucous formation in the sinuses and post nasal drip..
The mucous definitely seems to be coming through the sinuses secondary to allergies..
Allergies cause chronic irritation in the nose as well as sinuses and it is also a cause for polyp formation.
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
You can be advised to take a course of anti allergics like Monteulokast and Allegra and take decongestant nasal sprays..
Mucolutics like Ambroxol can help..
Do steam inahalations..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
