Can A Mouth Guard Cause Swelling On Right Side Of Face?

I have slight swelling to the right side of my face/head. While i know our face is not symmetrical, there is a noticeable swelling to that side. I do wear a mouth guard at night for clenching; could that be the cause although I don t clench on one side.

Hello there,
It is highly unlikely that your mouth guard could be the source of the swelling. It is more likely related to an issue with a tooth - possible infection or inflammation. It is also possible that muscullar spasm associated with TMD (Temperomandbluar dysfunction, as in a clenching habit) has caused an irregular "bump" appearance in the facial musculature. The definitive answer would require an in office consult. Warm compresses can also help to alleviate any symptoms if you have associated pain.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance - I'm here to help and happy to do so.
Be well,
Dr Shernan
