Can A Nuclear Stress Test Be Done After Consuming Alcohol?
I smoke 2 packs @ day and drink vodka each evening. I m scheduled for a nuclear med stress test (midi). The instructions never arrived in the mail but checking online, I know not to take my heart/cholesterol etc. meds 24 hrs before the test (that I have a hard time swallowing anyway). I also know not to eat/drink except water 3-4 hours prior to the test. However, I am definitely addicted to smoking and alcohol (which I can stop in order to meet the 4-hr criteria). However, I don t believe I can go that long without a cigarette. How will this affect my test.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Nuclear stress test uses radioactive dye and an imaging machine to create pictures showing the blood flow to your heart. It is advised to strictly stop consumption of caffeine, tobacco, smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol 12 hours before the test. Smoking and alcohol consumption could cause adverse outcome of the results and results might be difficult to interpret. Kindly follow the other instructions as advised.
Hope the information provided helps.
All the best.
Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran. S
