Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
a stent is already fixed in a person , can he go for MRI my father had balloning 7-8 years back and stent was fixed at that time, now at this time he has no heart problem. But skin doctor advised for mri for mole having on his forehead, kindly advise.
Good evening! Very good question. It all depends on the makeup of the stent. Many of the early stents, some 20-30 years prior were of a bare-metal casing and as a result, they would absolutely be a contraindication for any MRI scanning. MRI's are a high magnetic environment and could cause serious damage to your father's heart if they were to vibrate and dislodge as a result of the induced forces while under a scan. Nevertheless many if not most Cardiac stents are devoid of any metal products. As there are dozens of different types of stents I will not surmise as to what type your father could have had placed. Nevertheless, it is commonplace before MRI to obtain a full body X-ray to scan for any metal. I would suggest you obtain an X-ray to rule out any internal metal placements, and if he passes this; to proceed with MRI testing. I wish you and your father the best :)
