Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I don t know if it is possible but I just got off my period today. And now I m having severe pain like I m going to start again. But it s much worse than usual menstrual pain. Before I started my period I thought I could be, because I keep having sharp pains in my lower abdomen and back, but once I started I knew I couldn t be. But now I don t know it is. Is it possible to be pregnant and still have a period?

Emergency Medicine Specialist, Dr. Tim Evans's Response
Hi. If you may be pregnant and are experiencing bleeding and pains then you must get checked out as an emergency at your nearest Emergency Department in order to exclude an ectopic pregnancy, where the fetus implants in the wrong position. If you are pregnant you will need an urgent scan and will need to see the gynaecologists, given the symptoms you are experiencing. There are other causes for your symptoms if you are not pregnant, but these are likely to be less serious. In the first instance, you must make sure of your pregnancy status before anything else. Please be aware that "over-the-counter" pregnancy test kits may sometimes show a negative result in women in the early stages of pregnancy. If in any doubt, please see your doctor or visit your nearest Emergency Department.
