Can A Ruptured Baker’s Cyst Causing Soreness And Swelling Be Treated?

I have a very sore and swollen knee - my consultant removed much fluid (bloody) and injected cortisone as the MRI suggested a burst bakers cyst. This did not work and within a week he performed an athroscopy and took three biopsys. It was not infection, but the knee has not reduced and he has now suggested that I see a rheumatologist. He does not know what is wrong.....please can you help.

Hello,

With history, it appears that the ruptured baker's cyst has lead to damage to the internal structures of the knee joint.

This will take some time to heal. Rheumatologist may have a role to help you with some kind of medication for inflammation.

As you have taken steroids I will advise you to wait for a little, because after the rupture of the baker's cyst there might be a possibility of delayed healing as the body was adapted to have a cyst for the knee to function.

Try keeping the knee straight and do icing if you aren't diabetic. Because icing helps to reduce the inflammation and also will help to reduce the swelling. If pain is not much.

Then try doing static Quadriceps and hamstring as those muscles are to be concentrated for now to allow filling up the empty space.

I think this should work for you. Fluid accumulation may happen for some time but it will be fine soon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
