Can A Short Tongue Causing Speech Impairment Be Treated?
Dear Dr, My 4-year son does not even utter a single word. His tongue structure seems quite normal but one doctor, not specialized in this field, claimed that the tongue tip is too short to reach the teeth. Could you please send me you email to send you images of the kid's tongue. Thank you. Sultan YYYY@YYYY
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain at times if the tongue structure and size is normal but still a child is unable to talk or protrude his tongue can be due to the over attachment of lingual frenulum to the base of tongue..
If the frenulum is attached till the tip of the base of tongue then the tongue is unable to move and the child will not be able to talk..
This condition is known as Ankyloglossia or Tongue Tie..
I would therefore suggest you to consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation can help in diagnosis.. In case of tongue tie condition Frenulectomy can be done to remove excessive attachment of frenulum and will make tongue movement free.. It will help in easing speech and if your child finds it difficult to pronounce the words speech therapy can help..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
