Can A Stool Sample Reveal Alcoholism In The Patient?
Hi.... Boyfriend an alcoholic... He drinks 1.75 liter of gin in two days. He had recently had cramping his stomach. Went to Dr.... I'm sure he doesn't say he's an alcoholic, which he doesn't even realize. Anyways I'm certain he had a ulcer in his intestines because of the drinking. Dr is asking for A stool sample, is this something that will reveal his alcoholism?
Hi, Thanks for using healthcaremagic.com I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns. I see many similar cases especially among young males.Excessive alcohol definitely causes gastritis and sometimes even ulcer. If such a young man come to our clinic with similar complaints we definitely ask about the alcohol consumption,Stool examination is done to detect the presence of blood in stool,If blood preset it indicates that he has some kind of ulcerative lesion somewhere in his digestive tract. Stool examination could not detect alcoholism. But presence of blood in stool indirectly suggest the possibility of alcohol induced gastric(stomach) ulcer. I suggest you to consult a gastroenterologist and get an ultrasound of abdomen, pancreatic enzymes, upper GI endoscopy done to rule out any peptic ulcers and pancreatitis. Hope this information helps. If you have any further queries feel free to contact.
