Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi ,I just learned that my 65 Y/o brother has been hospitalized for a lower bowel obstruction. He has no Crohns, no diverticulitis (at least not diagnosed) and had an appendectomy about a year ago. My question is would it be possible for adhesion from that surgery to cause a total obstruction?
Yes, recurrent adhesion can worsen bowel obstruction.
Intestinal adhesion (bands of fibrous tissue in the abdominal cavity) that can develop after abdominal surgeries like appendectomy or severe inflammation are one of the common causes of total bowel obstruction.
Complete obstructions treated by conservative management have a higher incidence of recurrence than do those treated surgically. However, recurrent adhesion can worsen the bowel obstruction.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
