Can An Injection On The Thumb Cause Muscle Atrophy On The Injection Site?

I had an injection in my left thumb a few months ago and now right above the basal joint where the injection was placed the tissue has a sunken look about 1 inch long and 1/2 wide. It looks nasty. I asked the Doctor why this happen and she said perhaps there is muscle atropy and I have to exercise my hand which I have been doing. What cause this and will it get worsen over time?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
Subcutaneous fat and muscle atrophy can happen after injection even though it is very rare. It may be due to injury to small peripheral nerves.
Generally it will improve with physiotherapy and exercises.
You can consult a physiatrist ( a doctor specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation) and he will direct you accordingly. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
