Can An Old Fracture Cause Moth-eaten Appearance On A Bone?
An xray of my femur showed a moth eaten area of the diaphysis of my right femur. I received a nuclear medicine injected bone scan to rule out bone cancer. The radiology report suspects that there is old trauma in that femur (I had a femur fracture 45 years ago) that may be causing a non-cancerous lesion but he is being careful to make sure. Can an old fracture cause a moth eaten appearance on a bone?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Moth eaten bone is a stage recognised in healing of fracture. But it is rarely seen in old fractures. I would advise to follow your doctor's advice and get investigations done to exclude or find malignancy so that early needful intervention can be started which will help in full relief.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
