Hi! My mother in law whose 82 yrs. old complained of pain in her left nape going up her head. She went to the doctor and was given anti inflammatory meds to manage her pain. She is scared coz her blood pressure is 150/90. Is it safe to take the anti inflammatory meds considering she has other maintenance meds from high blood and diabetes?

Dear user,

I really understand your concern about your mother-in-law.

In Medicine field pros and cons while prescribing a drug are always considered.

Anti-inflammatory drugs are well-known that can increase blood pressure in both hypertensive patients and people with normal blood pressure level. On the other hand pain also may increase blood pressure.

She also may take paracetamol with codein for her pain and other general measures to control the pain, so that will no increase her blood pressure level.

For short time use anti-inflammatory drugs may be used where inflammation is present because paracetamol has only analgesic and antipyretic effects, or pain can't relieved by paracetamol+codein. In this case, an adjustment of dosage of antihypertensive drugs may be required.

All the best!
