Can Antibiotics Be Taken For Hematoma Post Tooth Extraction?

my father who is 92 had to have a tooth pulled and has developed a hemotoma
his oral surgeon has given him amoxicillin and advised to try using heat
the oral surgeaon actually went in with a needle to determin if there was any infection but found nothing but thought it would be best to give him an antiobiotic anyway
do you feel that the antibiotic will work and anything else my dad can be doing at this point

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain in case if there is a hematoma formation secondary to tooth extraction and in case if there are no obvious signs of infection then there is no need of antibiotics for treating hematoma..
But in case if the tooth is pulled recently then a short course of antibiotics are given inorder to prevent infection..
I would suggest you to continue antibiotics for 5 days along with Pantoprazole or Omeprazole empty stomach to prevent stomach discomfort caused by antibiotics..
For Hematoma he can do alternate warm and cool compresses over the hematoma as it will help in disrupting the hematoma faster..
Maintenance of good oral hygiene is must..
Take a soft diet..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
