Can Anything Happen If An IUD Is Not Removed On Time?
Hi, I have a mirena implant and the 5yrs is up. Can anything happen if it is left in too long? Also since having it my periods stopped totally for years, that was the main reason i had it also as my period was all over the shop so to speak and i would have heavy bleeding lasting up to two weeks once. Can I still fall pregnant if the mirena has been in for 5yrs am i still protected. I am almost 49yrs of age
Intra- Uterine Contraceptive Devices are classified into hormonal and non hormonal. Hormonal devices have synthetic analogue of natural hormones which acts as a contraceptive agent. While non-hormonal contraceptive devices contains copper which induces inflammatory reaction which helps in contraception.
Mirena contains Levonorgesterol as its ingredient, the level of which is maintained in the blood by the constant release of the hormones. It has lifespan of 5 years. But the studies show, it has lifespan of up to 7 years. If the thread is visible, there is no chance for displacement of the device. If the time for menopause is near, it is enough. But, the common advise is to change the device after 5 years for contraceptive effect. Visit the Gynecologist for further opinion.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
