Can Ataxia Be Passed On By A Father To The Child?

My grandma passed away from ataxia and she passed it down to my father aunt and uncle. My cousin (from my aunt) just recently found out she has ataxia. My mom growing up has always told me not to worry about inheriting it because she said only if the mother is the carrier then I would get it. Is that true? Or could I still 50% inherit it from my father.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Looking at the inheritance pattern of the ataxia it seems to be in autosomal dominant pattern which means that you might have chances of inheriting it from your father.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
