Can Avoiding Dehydration Prevent Atrial Fibrillation?
I was prepped for a colonoscopy and became very dehydrated. Before the test began, my blood pressure went up to 167/97 and my heart rate to 155. During the night before my heart began pounding in my chest. After two IV s and a dose of Cardizem, my blood pressure returned to normal and my heart rate to 65, which is about normal for me. I was told I had Afib. Do you think the Afib was caused by severe dehydration? Will I now have Afib forever? I have taken Benezapril 20mg daily for blood pressure. I had a physical several days earlier and was found to be in very good health , b/p was 126/80. All labs normal.
It is possible that the electrolyte disturbance caused by the dehydration could have been responsible for the atrial fibrillation that you experienced.
You may not have future episodes but your doctors will monitor to see if this is the case. If you do notice palpitations at intervals, then this may indicate that it is not resolving.
I hope this helps
