Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had unusual bowel movements since arriving home for the UK two weeks ago. Firstly diarrhoea, then constipation, with some unusual flatulence and now for the last five days watery diarrhoea containing mucus and sometimes solid faeces. I have a lot of discomfort and some pain in my stomach and lower back, some cramping too. I feel tired, have dark circles under my eyes. I have seen my doctor and have sample jars, however tomorrow is a public holiday so won t be able to do this until Tuesday. My grandad had bowel cancer and I am wondering should I be concerned?
Your symptoms could be an acute gastroenteritis or colitis. It refers to infection or inflammation of bowel. It can be treated with hydration, antibiotics and antacids.Bowel symptoms in a person with family history of cancer does not necessarily mean cancer. Do not worry.Following stool examination and antibiotic treatment, further assessment such as colonoscopy can be done if required to rule out cancer.
Hope that was helpful.Let me know if i can assist you further.
