Can Carrying Heavy Packs Up And Down Hills Cause Arthritis?
I was in the military 1968-76. about 5 years ago I started having arthritis in my feet and knees. There was no injury per se, I wasn't wounded in the feet or knees, but was in combat a couple of years, heavy packs up and down hills. Could this be a cause of the arthritis now after so long a time?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM. I have gone through your query. Carrying heavy things up and down can cause wear and tear to joints which can cause arthritis. So in your case it can be a reason. If it is mild to moderate then symptomatic treatment like NSAIDs for pain relief, drugs like dacerein and supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate will be helpful. Local capsaicin application also will help in pain relief. If your vitamin D level is low then you should also take vitamin d3 and calcium supplements. Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
